In the landscape of modern alternative music, few acts manage to balance clinical precision with raw, theatrical emotion quite like Joel X Eleanor. The London-based duo—soulmates whose creative partnership is as intertwined as their personal one—have officially stepped into a new era with their double release, “Garden Plot / Something Strange.” It is a haunting, beautiful exploration of love’s two faces: the obsessive and the intimate.
From Underground Roots to Power Alt
Before emerging as Joel X Eleanor, the pair spent years cultivating a cult following in the London underground scene under the moniker Sweet Anna. This new iteration, however, feels more expansive and intentional.
The duo’s dynamic is a masterclass in collaborative contrast. Joel, who spent his early childhood in remote Myanmar without electricity before discovering pop at age eleven, handles the intricate architecture of the music—writing, instrumentation, and production. Eleanor, a Hungarian-born Brit raised in a literary household, provides the soul of the project through her distinctive contralto and poetic lyrical instincts. Both identify as autistic and detail-driven, a trait that manifests in a sound where every synth layer and guitar swell feels meticulously earned.
The first half of the release, “Garden Plot,” is a fascinating study in how perspective can shift a narrative. What began as a romantic gesture—Eleanor’s idea to plant a lasting garden for Joel rather than gifting dying cut flowers—takes a turn into the obsessive through Joel’s brooding production.
The track’s origin story is as eclectic as its sound. Portions were recorded over Christmas at Joel’s grandmother’s house in Birkenhead and a Derby Airbnb, where the duo repurposed a stylized aluminum Christmas tree for percussion. The result is a song that feels domestic yet dangerous.
Keep an ear out for the subtle nod to Eleanor’s heritage; the track whispers a line from the legendary Hungarian poet Attila József: “Bite me, bite me – or I’ll bite you!” It’s a fittingly sharp sentiment for a song that explores the thin line between devotion and fixation.
The Vulnerability of “Something Strange”
If “Garden Plot” represents the weight of love, “Something Strange” represents its quiet gravity. Written largely by Joel, the track captures the surreal adjustment of merging two lives. It’s a softer, more vulnerable counterbalance that reflects on the transition from solitude to shared space.
With layered vocals and a focus on color and closeness, the track allows Eleanor’s voice to take center stage. Mixed and mastered by Julie Bartley at Rolling Audio, both songs showcase a signature “power alternative” sound—fusing the heavy, guitar-driven energy of influences like The Smashing Pumpkins and Muse with the sophisticated harmonic textures of London’s modern jazz scene.
Where Obsession and Romance Collide
With this double release, Joel X Eleanor have carved out a space that is unmistakably their own—dramatic, thoughtful, and deeply human. They aren’t just making music; they are building a sonic world where the strange and the beautiful are one and the same.
